BECAUSE YOU CAN
The best reason for moving to a retirement community is not because you have to. It’s because you can.
“I was looking for activities that involve my mind and kept me going. I think that you have to have the opportunity to do these things and get involved because you can.” – Phyllis Dreifus, resident of The Fountains at Millbrook
MEET PHYLLIS DREIFUS, A NATIVE NEW YORKER MAKING THE MOST OF HER RETIREMENT YEARS AT THE FOUNTAINS AT MILLBROOK.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Phyllis Dreifus on Monday, August 8th, 2016. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Phyllis hails from Brooklyn, where she attended public schools and worked in the garment industry. She met her husband there and they raised three children. Unfortunately, their marriage was cut short by his untimely death in 1984. After getting her college degree in 2002, Phyllis moved to Poughkeepsie to be closer to her daughter. Phyllis attended classes and events at The Fountains for years before she moved here in January 2016 at the age of 90. She’s glad her kids made all the arrangements. Especially now that she’s not driving, she can’t imagine living anywhere else.
WHY WASTE TIME?
If you could trade in all the time you’ve wasted waiting around for repair people or sitting in front of the TV, for pursuits you truly enjoy, would you do it? Living at the right retirement community gives you opportunities to get moving and stay active in mind, body and spirit. If you’re doing anything less where you’re living now, it could be time for a change. “…the most interesting part for me is the fact every hour of the day there is something happening and if you’re interested, if you have the strength, get out of your apartment and move around and go to these different conversations, discussions, music and whatever it may be.” – Phyllis Dreifus
GATHERING NO MOSS
Phyllis firmly believes that staying busy is the key to a happy, healthy life. “I start with exercise at 10:30 every day. I feel that’s what keeps me moving and walking. And whatever else is on the program, whether it’s current events or improvising or theater or a movie or a speaker. Whatever it is, I manage to attend and it keeps my interest involved. It keeps my brain involved as well as my body and I think that’s what keeps me going.” – Phyllis Dreifus
NON STOP FUN AND LEARNING
Phyllis found The Fountains to be friendly and warm from the get go and had no problem adjusting to her new way of life. In addition to staying busy at The Fountains, she still visits family in New Jersey on weekends and attends the conversational Yiddish class she helped start at the JCC. “But people have to be aware of that, that without being able to drive to activities when you’re at The Fountains you can walk to them. And there’s something happening all day long and I take advantage of that.” – Phyllis Dreifus
