KEEP ON THE SUNNY SIDE
You can’t relive the past so why not enjoy the future? At the right retirement community, you can.
“You have to look forward to all the things that are going to happen and so many good things happen. I can’t think of a day here that I haven’t been happy.” – Nadine Brill, resident of The Fountains at Millbrook
MEET NADINE BRILL, A RETIRED RED CROSS WORKER WHO RESCUED HERSELF FROM LONELINESS AND BOREDOM.
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Nadine Brill on Thursday, February 2nd, 2017. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
Nadine spent 64 years married to the man of her dreams. She and Keith traveled internationally for his business and raised three children in Newark, NY. For 26 years she served as Director of the Red Cross in Wayne County. When Keith passed away, Nadine’s kids found her an apartment nearby. Unable to drive due to vision changes, she grew lonely, bored and dependent on family. One day she decided enough was enough and started her search. At The Fountains, she still sees her family often, but also enjoys her independence. She dines with friendly neighbors, knits in a group for charity and looks forward to taking up woodcarving next.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED AND MORE
Every birthday brings change and the need to honestly evaluate your situation. Are you doing things you enjoy with people you like? Do you feel safe and secure? Can you get to the places you want to go independently? Are you looking forward to tomorrow? If you can’t answer “yes” to all of these questions, perhaps it’s time to evaluate your options. The right retirement community can eliminate all your worries and replace them with freedom, fun and friendship for years to come. But you won’t discover it unless you’re actively searching. Why not start today? “I should have come sooner. I put it off. But I think we go through that adjustment. I should have come sooner but I’m happy that I did it. I’m very happy that I did it. I have everything that I need here.” – Nadine Brill
LET YOUR SEARCH BEGIN
Wishing to free her children of worry and regain her independence, Nadine took decision-making into her own hands. There are many retirement communities and no two are alike. Not knowing where to start, she turned to A Place for Mom, which helped her narrow her search. Upon visiting, she found there were many communities she didn’t like at all. Then she discovered The Fountains. “I have to admit that from the minute I walked in here, I felt like I belonged. There was no pressure or anything but I just was made to feel welcome and to this day I feel that way. The staff and everything they just have been glorious.” – Nadine Brill
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Now Nadine has it all. “I’m close to my family. I’m able to participate in things that they do, birthday parties and things like this. But then I can do a lot on my own. I don’t have to be dependent on anybody. The hairdresser is here and I’m happy with her. And everything is inside…. I can look at the snow and know that I don’t have to go outside. I’m safe in here. My kids come to visit and my grandbaby comes to visit. So I’ve got the best of both worlds.” – Nadine Brill
