BE A FREE AGENT
Want to plan your best future? Take Jaye’s advice and settle in a place where you can be yourself.
“I’m a free agent. I can do as I please.” – Jaye Meyer, resident of The Fountains at Millbrook
MEET JAYE MEYER, WHOSE MOTTO IS “KEEP MOVING.”
You can learn a lot from someone who has been in your shoes. Their honest insight can help you navigate your way to the place that’s right for you, regardless of which community you choose. (All quotes contained in this post are excerpts from an interview conducted with Jaye Meyer on Wednesday, August 12th, 2015. To read the full, un-edited transcript, please click here.)
A native New Yorker, Jaye thrives on staying active and being around people. At 97 years young, she runs circles around people half her age. While most neighbors take advantage of convenient on site services, Jaye does her own cooking, cleaning and laundry. She even mends clothes and sells them. You’ll see her out planting flowers or weeding her five gardens, walking the premises or participating in the exercise class but you’ll only see her in the dining room when roast beef is on the menu! When she needs a ride to church or shopping, she’ll take it, not because she gave up driving; she never took it up. She explains, “I flunked the test twice and my husband said, ‘Hallelujah.’”
WHAT MAKES YOU TICK?
Interests come and go in life and what interests you today may not interest you tomorrow. The right retirement community can give you access to pursue lifelong passions and take up new ones. It can also accommodate your changing needs as your journey progresses, while giving you the freedom to live your way without the loneliness of living on your own. Can your current lifestyle do that? By examining the wide range of retirement living options available today, you just may discover a better path. “Plenty of things to do here to keep you active and keep your brain functioning. Because as you know… once you get older if you stay put in your room you’re not going to get anywhere.” – Jaye Meyer
STILL THRIVING 20 YEARS LATER
Jaye Meyer was 77 when she made the decision to move to a retirement community. Her husband had passed away two years earlier and she didn’t want to have to depend on anyone else. Since she loves the outdoors and only needed help with transportation, she situated herself where she can be who she wants to be, in the heart of the Hudson River Valley. For 20 years now, she’s been enjoying her independent lifestyle in a cottage at The Fountains at Millbrook. “I like gardening and I like being independent. I didn’t want to be in an apartment house and running an elevator. I wanted to be able to come and go as I pleased.” – Jaye Meyer
Jaye is a wonderful role model for aging well and while she isn’t one to force her opinions on others, she speaks her mind when asked. “I try to get people to get off their butt and get outside because they’re never going to have any fun or any pleasure in life if they stay put watching a television set. I always tell them before going to bed at night, ‘Look at your calendar so you know what the next morning brings and when it does come you know whether you want to do something or not.’” – Jaye Meyer
