At age 97, artist and New York local, Shirley Nemetz-Ress is going to be a “calendar girl.” Not exactly what you’re probably thinking however; Shirley’s talent in painting will have her artwork featured on the cover of Watermark Retirement Communities® annual Expressions! Calendar. The Fountains at Millbrook, a Watermark community, participates in the calendar “competition” that has been ongoing for more than 19 years. Residents from all over the country submit their artwork for a chance to be featured in the full-color calendar. This year, Shirley’s piece, Magenta I, will take center stage.
“The best part of winning was the camaraderie of my fellow artist friends here,” she said.
Although her family spent winters in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she met artists, took lessons, visited museums and enjoyed art inspired by the county, Shirley didn’t take up painting until she was 72 years old. But with a vibrant spirit and passion for trying new things, no amount of time hindered her ability to create beautiful art for both neighbors and fellow residents nationwide to enjoy.
Look for Shirley’s art, alongside other beautiful pieces in the 2019 Expressions! Calendar.
